Where The Rubber Meets The Road

Oftentimes in coaching I’ll find myself having themed days. Maybe it’s the planets aligning, maybe it’s my clients conspiring behind my back, or maybe I just attract a certain type of client so of course many of my clients share similar struggles. It’s definitely the third option, but I like to think there’s a cosmically-inspired group of my clients who only meet on the full moon 😉

I had a themed day recently: I know what to do, I just don't know how to do it.

“I know what my run program needs to be to train for this marathon, I just can’t get myself to write it down and execute it.”

“I know that I operate better when I have a strict schedule, I just have so much flexibility in my life I can’t commit to a strict schedule.”

“I know I do better with my weight when I log all of my food, I just can’t seem to remember to actually open the app after each meal.”

These are real life examples from my clients.

Do you ever find yourself falling in this trap? I definitely do! For me it’s waking up early in the morning (remember this Instagram series?). I am the absolute best version of myself when I wake up at 6am. I know this without a doubt, and yet sometimes I still hit that snooze button and stay in bed until 6:45.

Why do we do this? It’s easier to dream than it is to do (see this blog post). It’s where the rubber meets the road that we struggle.

Here are 3 ways to deal with this issue:

  1. Get super clear on WHY whatever the thing that works for you is works. Why does waking up at 6am work so well for me? Honestly, it makes me feel elite! I feel so accomplished early in the day which ends up making the rest of my day more productive. (There’s also something to be said for acting as the person you want to be, but that’s going to need to be another newsletter.)

  2. Give yourself a trial run - and a reason to actually do it. Let’s use the example of having a strict schedule for this one. Attempt it for 1 day. Plan your next day hour by hour and commit to doing it for just 1 day. Schedule a few things in your day that aren’t flexible like an appointment you’ve been putting off - forcing yourself to adhere to the schedule. You can do anything for 1 day! This will not only remind you that you are indeed capable of following through on something, but also give you a win to boost you into the next day. You did it once, why not do it again?

  3. Get an accountability buddy. Who in your life might be struggling with the same things you are? Who did you run your last marathon with? Reach out to them as ask if you can share your running schedule with them.

  4. BONUS! Sign up for my daily accountability coaching! Together we will spend one 45 minute session crafting your ideal action plan and then schedule daily 10-15 minute touchpoints unpacking what worked, what needs to be tweaked, and tracking your progress every step of the way for a whole month!
