Can Coaching Help With Anxiety

More than 50% of the population will be diagnosed with depression and/or anxiety in their lifetime. Odds are you have received or will receive a diagnosis of one or both of these in your lifetime. Hands up if you already have! (Hi! It’s me!)

Because these statistics are so staggeringly high, I get a lot of clients that come to me in hopes that coaching will help their anxiety or depression. But can coaching actually help you cope with a depression or anxiety diagnosis?

The first thing to know is that coaches are not medical professionals. Even if your coach also happens to be an MD, in their capacity as a coach they are NOT a medical professional. Coaches have no ability to diagnose or treat mental illness. Point being, if you think you may be clinically depressed or anxious, a coach is not the place to go to seek that validation.

Where coaching can be helpful with these diagnoses is helping you craft a plan of management.

What are the things that help with depression and anxiety? Things like sticking to your medication schedule, exercising every day, eating a healthy diet, taking small steps to face the things that give you anxiety, establishing routines, keeping in touch with friends and loved ones, having regularly scheduled therapy appointments, setting goals… see where this is going? 😉

These are all things I help my clients with as a coach!

Together we can talk about where your routine is lacking and come up with strategies to implement some of these things that you know will be good for you.

One of the most powerful things to explore is how your life will change once you are able to regularly implement these changes. How much better will you feel once you are exercising 5 times a week, hanging out with friends every weekend, and eating fruits and vegetables with every meal?

In fact, if you are struggling with anxiety or depression why don't you take a moment to consider that topic right now? It can be a great motivator to behavior change!

So no, coaching can’t diagnose anxiety or depression, but it can serve as a valuable tool to help you treat and manage it!

If you’ve been diagnosed with depression or anxiety and feel like talking about implementing some of these healthy habits may be helpful, schedule an appointment with me and let’s start to figure it out!
